Which formula of Loki and Moon Knight should Agatha All Along take to create an impression?
Loki, a limited TV series aired on Disney+ from 2021 to 2023, explores Loki’s adventure with TVA or Time Variance Authority. Moon Knight, on the other hand, which aired in 2022, tells the story of Marc Spector, who has and who, along with his other personality, Steven Grant, sets out to stop a deadly conspiracy involving Egyptian Gods. Both till now are the critically acclaimed shows which appeared on Disney+.
Some common formula regarding both shows has been found that was common for their success that can be followed by Agatha All Along also.
Common Formulas Regarding their success
Loki | Moon Knight |
The series was only focused on Loki’s point of view and did not provide a particular focus on other characters. | Like Loki, this show focused solely on Marc Spector/ Steven Grant and their point of view. |
Loki followed a single storyline in both seasons and didn’t try to create multiple storylines in a single show. | Just like Loki, Moon Knight did this same trope as the prime storyline in this process was Marc and Steven ensuring to stop Arthur Harrow. |
Since Loki took place in a timeless zone with him going on past and future simultaneously, the cinematography and art based on it have successfully excluded it. | Moon Knight is in this process, especially since it is a vigilante superhero film. The cinematography and art have successfully excluded it, especially the fight sequences. |
The series’ main antagonists, like He Who Remains and General Dox, were well built up and had a proper motive established to commit the deeds. | Similarly, in this series, Arthur Harrow, the main villain, was successfully justified regarding his motive. |
The humor of this show was well-balanced, along with the serious take. | There was limited humor on the show, but it was also successfully incorporated by the showrunners through various artistic ways, such as music. |
This show didn’t try to go all out to forcefully connect with the MCU by unnecessary cameos. | This same trope was also repeatedly avoided as all of the characters in the series were debuting for the first time. |
Agatha All Along seems to follow these formulas as per the first two episodes. The entire show is from Agatha’s point of view. Since the genre of the show is horror and magic, the makers have depicted the horror and magic genre by cinematography and art in an excellent way. The humor of Agatha All Along till now is well balanced. Besides that, they avoided various unnecessary cameos from the MCU to show that this is a connected universe. The first two episodes, which have been released, somehow follow this line, but some formulas of She-Hulk and Secret Invasion were also seen in both episodes, which can cause a lot of trouble for the series Agatha All Along.
The formulas of She-Hulk and Secret Invasion must be avoided at any cost by Agatha
She-Hulk, which aired in 2022, was the journey of Jennifer Jen Walters, a lawyer by profession and her origin story of becoming She-Hulk. On the other hand, Secret Invasion is a show aired in 2023 that mainly centers around Nick Fury and Talos and how they prevent an invasion of Skrull on Earth.
Both of the shows, despite building up the hype, failed miserably and still, both of the shows are considered one of the major flops in the TV division of Marvel. Some common formulas regarding this were also seen in the first two episodes of Agatha All Along, and if this formula isn’t avoided in future episodes, chances are this show will be the next in line of getting rejected.
Common Formulas Of She-Hulk and Secret Invasion which needs to be avoided
She-Hulk | Secret Invasion |
It incorporates a bunch of plots that don’t make any sense in the storyline, like the pen pals of Abomination. | The Talos or Skrull Rhodey subplot didn’t add anything to the storyline. |
Introducing a bunch of characters with no aim or motive to be on the show and their impact didn’t provide any new insight. | Similarly, in this show, characters like the daughter of Talos were there for no reason at all, and they had zero impact on the main plot. |
The CGI was awful, especially on She-Hulk and Skaar. | The CGI, especially in the explosion or Skrull scenes, was terrible. |
There was no character development of the lead. | Similarly, there was no development of the main characters which are Nick Fury and Talos. |
The main antagonist, Todd Phelps, has no character development; there are no reasons why he was aiming to kill She-Hulk. | Similarly, Gravik, the main antagonist, had no solid reason for aiming to invade Earth through Skrulls. |
She-Hulk was supposed to be a courtroom drama, but it failed on this premise as it became more like Jen Walters’ daily life. | Secret Invasion was supposed to be a spy thriller, but it felt more like some soap opera due to unnecessary focus on Nick Fury and his wife. |
The cameos of Abomination, Wong, and Daredevil didn’t make any sense, and it was forcefully done to show their connection to the MCU. | There was only one cameo, which was by the character of James Rhodes, but it felt so forced. |
Despite ignoring many of them, Agatha All Along has some aspects of this in this process, as seen in the first two episodes. A couple of characters like Sharon Davis were on the show where their requirement was not needed. Some CGIs looked unfinished. Despite being two episodes, Green Witch or Salem’s Seven still didn’t get the proper build-up as an antagonist should. Despite the core part of the series from someplace, the magic trope felt like it was completely missing. Agatha All Along is also teasing the appearance of Wanda Maximoff, but this will be so forced and will not make any sense because the character has already died away in the Multiverse of Madness film.
Agatha All Along hopefully has to avoid these tropes in the following episodes; otherwise, if the tropes keep following, this show will face another rejection like She-Hulk or Secret Invasion. The success of this show is crucial as it is also tied to the future of Marvel content on Disney+.
Why Agatha All Along is being tied with the future of Marvel in Disney+
Bob Iger, the head of Disney, recently announced that due to the excessive failures of the TV side of Marvel, with only a few successes being on the board, they are considering releasing only two series every year. This can also drastically lead to seeing some upcoming highly anticipated TV series like Blade and Vision Quest be canned ultimately or delayed indefinitely.
The series, for example, like Blade, can be filled with high-quality content in the final output due to the people attached to it. If the success of this show happens, then there is a high chance that Disney will reconsider this strategy, and fans will have an opportunity not to be deprived of this series like Blade, Vision Quest, which is mentioned here.
What is the future of Agatha All Along? Is it hit or miss?
By the first two episodes of Agatha All Along, it can be perceived that the show is basically on track and using formulas like what Loki and Moon Knight did on their respective shows to become a massive hit in front of fans, so this directly indicates the future of this show is in good hands. However, in previous Disney+ shows of Marvel, some TV shows have just started, like Agatha, which has a good premise, but later, the execution story was so poor that it fell flat.
Also, it is seen that the show follows some familiar tropes of She-Hulk and Secret Invasion, which is a bad sign for the series. However, nothing can be said about the show’s future as only two episodes have aired, and it still has a long path to follow.
In this manner, if the show is inclined to follow the formula of Loki and Moon Knight, chances are high that this show will successfully create an impression among fans. However, if it heavily relies on the formula of She-Hulk and Secret Invasion, the show will fail miserably in this process. So, there are 50:50 chances for hit-and-miss in this aspect.
Agatha All Along is currently streaming on Disney+; however, the people of India can access this series directly through the Disney+ Hotstar app.
