Delhi Drenched: Relief From Heat, Rise in Traffic Woes

  • Continuous rainfall across Delhi and NCR since morning.
  • IMD predicts moderate rain (5–15 mm/hr) with thunderstorms.
  • Waterlogging at Mahamaya flyover, Ambedkar Park, and other low-lying areas.

The national capital is witnessing heavy rainfall with dark clouds overshadowing the skyline, offering much-needed relief from the recent heatwave and high pollution levels. India Gate, Mandi House, Tughlak Road, and several key stretches in Noida and Ghaziabad are submerged under rainwater. However, the downpour has resulted in traffic snarls, particularly near Mahamaya flyover and Ambedkar Park, where roads are heavily waterlogged. Vehicles were seen navigating through reduced visibility with headlights on, reflecting the intensity of the rainfall.

IMD Alert and Airport Advisory

  • Orange alert issued by IMD for Delhi.
  • Delhi Airport issues passenger advisory citing “inclement weather”.
  • Flights remain unaffected as on-ground teams work to manage operations.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for the city, forecasting moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms. Despite the rainfall, the Indira Gandhi International Airport confirmed that flight operations remain unaffected. Passengers have been advised to check with their airlines for real-time updates.

Monsoon Stats and AQI Improvement

  • Delhi’s seasonal rainfall stands 8% above the average since June 29.
  • Safdarjung recorded 8.8 mm of rain till 5:30 pm on Tuesday.
  • AQI remains in the satisfactory category, marking a sharp improvement.

According to IMD data, Delhi has received 234.6 mm of rainfall this season compared to the normal average of 217.5 mm. Safdarjung and Ridge stations recorded 8.8 mm and 22.4 mm of rainfall respectively on Tuesday. The persistent rains have brought the AQI down to satisfactory levels, significantly improving air quality across the region.

Final Outlook

The spell of rainfall has not only cooled down the temperature to 28°C but also improved air quality. However, the civic infrastructure is being tested as waterlogging disrupts daily commutes. With more rain expected, authorities are on alert to manage traffic congestion and flood-prone areas.
