Odisha’s tactic to counter the threat

The Odisha government, in response to Cyclone Dana has decided to close various schools in the districts which could be affected by it from October 23 to 25 for three days. This is the list of districts in this process where the schools have been closed :

Besides that, the Odisha Government also initiated the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) and state fire service in various coastal areas. Besides that, the Odisha Government has also evacuated tourists from Puri. The Chief Minister of Odisha, Mohan Charan Majhi, has also directed that essential services like electricity, water supply and telecommunications should be restored quickly in the aftermath of the storm. He also guaranteed that their government would ensure zero causality and provided assurance to the citizens that they didn’t need to panic. 

The deputy chief minister of Odisha, Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo, has also announced that the Odisha Government, in this process, is fully prepared to tackle Cyclone Dana. However, not only is Odisha effectively undertaking preparation to deal with it, but Bengal, in this process, is also active in countering this threat since the coastal areas of this state have also issued on yellow alert.

Bengal’s tactic to counter the threat

The Kolkata Municipality  Corporation has lined up multiple measures to effectively tackle Cyclone Dana. This process some it are including various strategies to successfully combat waterlogging, Removing hoarding billboards and bamboo, which can cause accidents by falling onto pedestrians, also keeping teams ready to quickly uproot trees and street light posts. Moreover, the Kolkata Police has also effectively set up more than two dozen od DMG teams that will be ready to clear various roads.

Kolkata Municipality Corporation also prepared there relief team to successfully provide relief to those places where it was needed. Besides that, the municipality is also preparing to demolish various buildings that can cause massive damage during the heavy rainfall which will come from Cyclone Dana. The residents of those buildings have also been planned by KMC to evacuate to safe places.

In response to Cyclone Dana, various events have been postponed that are mainly scheduled to occur in Odisha or Bengal. One of them is President Droupadi  Murmu’s three-day visit to Odisha that was scheduled from October 23 to 25, which is now postponed as the president was scheduled to visit various locations like Puri, which have been declared as red alert zones. This was confirmed by the statement from the Rashtrapati Bhawan.

Also, another event which has postponed is the inauguration of the 450 crores modern passenger terminal at Bengal’s Petrapole on the Indo-Bangladesh Border, where Amit Shah the Home Minister of India would be the special guest has been postponed. The decision was undertaken to ensure safety, as stated in the official statement from the office of the Home Ministry.

Why is it called Cyclone Dana?

The name is actually provided by Saudi Arabia. The reason why they provided the name is due to being part of one of the 14 countries that are being listed under the World Metrological Organisation to provide names for cyclones in the North Indian Oceans. The name Dana is actually an Arabic word which means generosity. The reason why the name of the cyclones is being put like this as being stated by WMO to ensure that it avoids confusion among various organisations and also helps them to keep research on the particular storms.
