Films have always been made on superheroes or anti-heroes, but there is a lack of representation of villains where the centre focus is on them. Todd Phillips 2019 broke this stereotype when he decided to make a film about Joker, who is also the arch-nemesis of Batman in comics.

The upcoming movie of Joker titled Joker: Folie à Deux, which will be released on 2 October 2024, is the continuation of the 2019 story, but this time, the madness will be linked with a new genre that has been missed in the previous edition, which is that this film will embrace the psychological thriller onto the musical aspect. The question also speculated to viewers why the sequel of the Joker was called Joker: Folie à Deux.

The reason for the name Folie à Deux?

Since the title Joker: Folie à Deux was released, fans have wondered why such a title has been applied to the film. However these words have been significantly tied up with the main content of the film in an efficient way. These two words are primarily a French word which means Madness in Two.

Also, this is used to describe the Lasegue-Falret syndrome, which depicts two or more people sharing the same madness or delirium. Since Harley Quinn appears in the films, the makers purposely use this title to confirm how the plot will be going forward into the madness of both of them.  A key aspect from the trailers also shows that madness will be the central part of this particular film.

One of the critical aspects seen from the trailer is that it successfully emphasises continuity. The trailer of Joker: Folie à Deux starts with Arthur Fleck appearing in a court dubbed as the trial of the century. A voiceover states the chaos Arthur has brought on the city two years ago, referring to the climax of the first film. The theme of hallucination is one of the key aspects that has been found in the trailer; it is shown that Joker is in his makeup from the first film and hitting the judge with the gravel, which is unusual and confirms that Arthur is hallucinating once again which he did in the first part.

Another key aspect is taking adaption from classic films as the prequel of the film heavily took inspiration from Taxi Drive film this film will take heavy inspiration from the 1982 classic film of Francis Ford Cappola name, One from the Heart. The aesthetic visualisation and the cinematography heavily indicate this point, mainly because it shows that madness will be the key part of the film through the characterisation of Harley Quinn, portrayed by Lady Gaga.

Harley Quinn, especially her personality and key behaviours like stating that she ensures to create massive chaos and making up small and psychotic smirks also, judging by the appearance of this version of Harley Quinn, it can be seen that there is a vast difference between Joker: Folie à Deux version of Harley Quinn and the Margot Robbie one.

The rumours that have been seen regarding the film have come directly from prominent scoopers like DanielRPK, MyTimeToShine, CanWeGetToast, etc, who have a track record of accuracy in this process due to their prominent connection inside the studios of Hollywood.

Not only Harley Quinn, but the rumours suggest that Joker: Folie à Deux will also introduce classic Batman villains. The rumour of the character of Brendan Gleeson supports this. It was even revealed his character’s name is Jackie Sullivan, one of the guards of Arkham State Hospital. However, if rumours are to be believed, then he is not Jackie Sulivan; it is his fake name; he is Hugo Strange posing as a guard in Arkham to kidnap the patients for his experiments. Hugo Strange is a prominent foe of the Caped Crusader in the comics. Not only Hugo Strange but another Batman villain is also rumoured to appear in the film.

The character of Jacob Lofland is also rumoured to be a young, different version of Jonathan Crane. In the comics Jonathan Crane is a former doctor at Arkham who later adopted the supervillain persona of Scarecrow. He might appear in the film as a patient of Arkham. Similarly, it is also speculated that George Carroll in Joker: Folie à Deux might be playing Oswald Cobblepot, who in the comics goes by the moniker of Penguin and is already an established mob boss just like in the comics. Another rumour beside them which has been seen that many of them perceived it might be true.

The rumour is that Lady Gaga’s Harley might not be a real person, just like in the prequel where it is seen that Arthur can hallucinate. He might be hallucinating her throughout the entire film; she might be the symbol of justification for Arthur for all sorts of madness he is being busy up to. Arthur Fleck, just like how he became Joker, another character also rumoured to transform into the classic villains of Batman in the film.

Harvey Dent, as it is confirmed that he is appearing in the film portrayed by Harry Lawtey. A rumour and also fan theory regarding Dent is that Todd Phillips will use a deleted concept of Dark Knight in the movie where that film, there was a concept of Joker throwing acid on Harvey Dent’s face in the court during his trial, transforming him into Two-Face. This same thing will be repeated in the climax part. However, not only the Batman villains are the ones who are making appearances in the film; a character was also rumoured to be in the movie who in the Batman mythos is a supporting character.

The character of Sharon Washington is also speculated to be playing a race bending version of Dr Leslie Thompkins. In the comics, she is a supporting character in the Batman franchise, a psychiatrist by profession who helps Bruce Wayne overcome his grief from the death of his parents. Since Joker: Folie à Deux takes place in 1983, two years after Joker, she might appear in the scenes comforting Bruce Wayne as his parents in the previous film got assassinated at the climax, and the grief is still on him. This also makes a potential Batman/Bruce Wayne appearance on the card.

Will Batman appear in Joker 2?

Even though a young version of Bruce Wayne appeared in the first part of Joker, portrayed by Dante Pereira Olson. A Batman appearance in Joker: Folie à Deux is highly impossible due to the age of Dante Pereira Olson, the character of Bruce Wayne in that film might be 11. Since Joker, based on the synopsis, is taking place two years after the first event in 1981, it automatically puts the film into 1983.

So Bruce might be 13 years old in the movie, and at this point, he is more likely to be still in grief about the loss of his folks and yet to quest on his journey of training in various parts of the world on the process of becoming the classic Batman.
