On 26 May 2024, Remal cyclone was observed on the West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts. A storm took place between Sagar Island and Khepupare in Bangladesh. The storm formed in the Bay of Bengal with heavy wind flow. Gradually, the wind flow and the storm became structured as a cyclone storm, which made landfall with a wind speed of 135 km/h. At the initial stage of the landfall, the storm brought wind of 110 km/h -120km/h.

It determined that the Remal was the second most deadly cyclone after the Amphane cyclone, which affected eastern India a few years ago. Due to the cyclone rainfall notices in the coastal area of West Bengal, the hurricane also became a reason for heavy rainfall in north Odisha and another part of northeast India. Oman gave the cyclone’s name “Remal “; the term remen is an Arabic word that means sand. While forming, the cyclone slows wind and sand from the Bay of Bengal; therefore, Oman decides to name the cyclone Remal.

The cyclone caused significant destruction in the coastal part of West Bengal, where it was observed that the people from the coastal area became homeless, and approximately 30,000 families suffered from the hurricane because the cyclone damaged their residential areas. Around 2600 houses were destroyed. The municipality team of Kolkata shows their significant presence and ability to deal with any natural calamities. After the Remal cyclone, it was observed that the wind caused considerable destruction. Therefore, the municipality team of Kolkata immediately took action to clean those that were uprooted and destroyed transportation. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) employed 15,000 civil service agents to deal with the post-cyclone destruction.

The primary reason the municipality of Kolkata is taking the cleaning approach is the delay in-flight service. Due to the deadly cyclone, the Kolkata airport had to postpone flight service for 21 hours. The southern part of West Bengal, especially South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, and Kolkal, was highly affected by the cyclone. Therefore, The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) provided 14 relief teams to the state government.

The current analysis reflects that the cycle killed thirty-nine people who lived in the coastal area. Along with affecting the people who live on the coast of West Bengal, the deadly cyclone also affected people who live in Assam and Meghalaya. Therefore, the government of West Bengal decided to provide financial support to those people who were affected due to the deadly cyclone. The chief minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee state, at the election rally Behala in Kolkata, said that the West Bengal government successfully shifted approximately 46 lakh people to a safe place to secure their lives from the cyclone and its effects.

Additionally, the Assam relief authority initiated an operation to rescue people from the affected area and provide necessary resources to people in need with the help of the Indian army. The Assamese relief team also established more than a hundred relief camps, from which people took shelter who lost their homes due to the deadly Remal cyclone.

The Indian Meteorological Department Ministry of Earth Science previously predicted the deadly impact of the cyclone on the coasts of the eastern part of India. Therefore, the authority published a report for the fishermen with a graphical indicator to develop the message about not venturing into the danger-marked area. However, the cyclone report determines fishermen will be able to continue their their fishing activity after the fifth day of landfall, 30.05.2024.
