Recently, experts and academic professionals at Seattle University have identified a new sexual orientation called “symbiosexuality”, which signifies the interest of a group of individuals called “Symbiosexuals” towards the unification of the collective energy of two or more people in a relationship.

People following the ideologies and notions of Symbiosexuality are considered Symbiosexuals. The concept of Symbiosexuals signifies the involvement of individuals who are interested in multidimensional relationships. These people are highly attracted to the intimate bond shared by two individuals, which primarily relates to how two people communicate or are involved emotionally and sexually. The concept completely differs from the traditional notions of desire, human interaction and physical involvement. It is not any particular individual which majorly attracts Symbiosexuals but the relational energy prevailing between them and other people, irrespective of their sexual preferences, social beliefs, cultural norms and so on.
The concept of Symbiosexuals was first introduced and evaluated by Johnston (2024) in a study named Symbiosexuality: A Review of Discourses of Attraction to the “Third Force” Created by People in Relationships. The author, to prove the existence and relevance of sapiosexuals, conducted a group of surveys considering a sample of adults in the US. From the surveys, it was gathered that almost 10% of the female representatives and 18% of male participants reported their engagement and involvement in threesomes, which further indicated the presence of such individuals who are possibly attracted to the relationship or relational bond of two individuals in close relationships.
Furthermore, a survey funded by the Kinsey Institute was conducted, considering a sample of 4000 survey respondents. Through this survey, the respondents were asked about their sexual desires and fantasies, where “threesome” was considered the most common fantasy by the majority of respondents. The study further included a range of diverse participants belonging from all 50 states of the USA, where 1/3 of participants preferred multi-partnered sex as their primary priority. The survey also revealed crucial results based on the opinions of 95% of men and 87% of women who were also interested in threesomes or wanted to engage in such close emotional relationships.
People belonging to other regions, such as the Netherlands, Canada and Belgium, also implicated their desire for threesomes, which uniquely signifies the possibility that these people believe in concepts of “Symbiosexuality” altogether. A crucial finding also indicated the presence of any men and women in the USA who had an interest in polygamous relationships and non-monogamous sexual involvement and fantasies.
Assumptions based on the traits and characteristics of Symbiosexuals
Attracted to the relational dynamics of two or more people in close relationships
Unlike any other couple, Symbiosexuals are individuals who are highly attracted to how two people in love or situational associations interact with one another. They are also influenced by how a relational unity of two people progresses despite facing odds and other social barriers. The involvement of two people and how two individuals in a relationship complement or challenge each other makes them feel excited, delighted and emotional.
In most cases, Symbiosexuals are drawn to the deep emotional bond of two intimate people, where they tend to appreciate how they are challenged by people and situations surrounding them. The attraction or the sense of emotional attachment also comes from the energies that two people share in a close relationship and how the emotions these two people hold affect their bond when exposed to social and emotional barriers.
An extensive focus on the emotional growth of two people
Symbiosexuals tend to affect a relationship by often making it more robust and more sustainable than usual. Their satisfaction is that two or more individuals in a relationship are emotionally involved and share a strong emotional bond, which exudes a sense of emotional unity and mutual involvement. The emotional growth also caters to their satisfaction, often leading to positive and negative consequences.
The emotional bond which symbiosexuals are looking for can sometimes become hard to handle, as deep emotional connections can make them feel secluded while being a part of a “symbiosexual” relationship. It can also make them feel separated and excluded, which can question their true significance in a close emotional and sexually involved relationship between two specific individuals.
Strong empathy and understanding
The relational dynamics of two people are complex and require a careful understanding of priorities, differences, and the boundaries these individuals set for emotional growth and progressive unification. The involvement of Symbiosexuals tends to solve this problem as their sense of understanding of priorities and differences comes from an unbiased standpoint.
These people, often referred to as “unicorns”, can also display excellent communication skills, making a relationship more engaged and people in a relationship responsive to the boundaries set to attain a more deeply involved relational involvement. However, the concept is niche, which makes these assumptions particular possibilities that may or may not act as realities in the future. Despite this, the emerging sexual orientation certainly raises a lot of questions concerning the acceptance of symbiosexuals in traditional societies.
Acceptance of Symbiosexuals as a part of traditional societies

People in the last few decades have indeed claimed themselves as individuals who are interested in polygamous relationships and sexual desires and erotic fantasies such as threesomes, which are considered taboo and sometimes unethical by several other people in diversified social structures and communities. In many global regions, the concepts of lesbianism, gays or symbiosexuality are not accepted as such concepts do not align with their cultural values and societal norms and practices, which people with a monogamous mindset have followed for a long time now.
It is often seen that conventional societies sometimes have rigid views on emotional and sexual relationships which does not support concepts and sexual orientations such as queer or Symbiosexuality. The associations which are highly preferred in general are monogamous and primarily heterosexual. Hence, it can be said that the idea of “unicorns” or the involvement of a third person in a relationship might seem unrealistic or unviable in the initial stages. However, acceptance of such gender identities may come in the future when people from conventional societies can effectively accept individuals by looking into the positive sides instead of the negative consequences.
The concept of symbiosexuality is very new and can be primarily misunderstood by people in traditional communities as they might find it confusing, disastrous and difficult to relate to. People in such societies can often discard such ideas and identify them as unethical, which they believe anyone in their close social circles must never engage with. The concept can also create conflicts in family structures that are genuinely monogamous, as acceptance of people as a part of conventional societies might seem unnatural and sudden.
However, such issues are not that relevant today, where people are aware of their rights and how it helps them express them as they want. However, it is the responsibility of every society to accept and even socialize with individuals without judging their personal preferences and ways in which they engage and involve other people with consent to a mutual agreement. It is essential as it creates a unified culture with people with an inclusive mentality and sympathy and empathy towards one another.
