Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy launched free fine rice distribution through the Public Distribution System on Telugu New Year Ugadi in Huzurnagar constituency.

Telangana claims to be the first state in India to introduce free fine rice distribution, ensuring food security for 84-85% of the state's population.

Each member of a BPL family with a white ration card will receive 6 kilograms of fine rice monthly instead of coarse rice.

The scheme will benefit 89.73 lakh white ration card holders covering 2.8 crore people, with 30 lakh new applications bringing total beneficiaries to 3.10 crore.

The Telangana government will spend Rs 10,600 crore annually on this landmark food security initiative.

Previously, beneficiaries weren't consuming the coarse rice, instead selling it to rice millers for Rs 10 per kg, who would resell it at Rs 50 per kg.

The Chief Minister criticized the previous BRS government for discouraging paddy cultivation, while his Congress government is paying a Rs 500 bonus per quintal of fine rice.
