Now that Meleys is dead, who will challenge Vhagar in the House of the Dragon (HOTD) season 2 finale?

The House of the Dragon season finale will air on 4th August 2024, as Vhagar, Westeros’s largest dragon, will potentially face Vermithor, Silverwing and Caraxes. But can either of these three challenge this beast that killed Meleys like nothing?

How strong is Vhagar?

We all know that Vhagar is a beast, probably the strongest and the biggest dragon after Balerion, the Black Dread, with the most battle experience. We also knew Meleys, the swiftest dragon, rode by Rhaenys Targaryen, the third largest after Caraxes, who Vhagar defeated with a single bite around her neck. Though Vhagar was severely hurt, she recovered quicker than expected. She returned as we saw her in episode 7 (Season 2) confidently chasing Silverwing, who was found trespassing with her new rider.

Vhagar vs Caraxes, Silverwing, Vermithor and Seasmoke

Well, if you ask me, I will say that the “The Bronze Fury”, Vermithor, Silverwing, and Syrax can take the beast down, but the odds are not good. An enraged Vhagar can take down Syrax in one blow and strike down Silverwing quickly, much quicker than Meleys. However, Caraxes, “The Blood Wyrm”, is fierce and swift, with almost the same battle experience as Vhagar, and certainly faster than that mountain-sized beast.

As a fanboy and a supporter of the Blacks, I would say that Caraxes will probably give the best fight. But Daemon, stuck with Caraxes in Harrenhal, is less likely to appear on the battlefield, leaving Vermithor and Silverwing as the only hope. There is also a Seasmoke who has chosen a non-Targaryen rider with significant battle experience as well. With all forces combined, the blacks are indeed at an unfathomable advantage.

Can Vermithor take down Vhagar in 1vs1 combat?

The answer is yes and no, as it is the most enormous dragon after Vhagar but has limited battle experience. Now that he has a new rider, Hugh Hammer, he can challenge Vhagar 1vs1, but the latter is undoubtedly at a more significant advantage due to its size and ferocity. But again, how Meleys was destroyed raises a question of how strong Vhagar is compared to the other remaining dragons.

Moreover, Aemond, Vhagar’s rider, is significantly more skilled than Hugh, as he claimed Vermithor and has no experience in riding a dragon and using it on a real battlefield. However, her rage and her bonding with Aemond can create many problems for the Blacks. Though Rhaenyra seems quite confident of the outcome, one must not take Vhagar as a joke, as its appearance can frighten anyone who has never seen a dragon before.

What else do the Greens have other than Vhagar?

The Greens are entirely dependent on Vhagar, and we all know that it is the largest, strongest, and fiercest dragon compared to all other dragons owned by the Greens. Sunfyre, ridden by Aegon, was severely hurt in the battle against Meleys, where I think Aemond intentionally attacked his brother because of this desire to sit on the Iron Throne. There is Dreamfyre, rode by Helaena Targaryen, who is in a terrible emotional state after her son Jaehaerys was viciously killed by Blood and Cheese, the assassins hired by Daemon actually to kill Aemond, without notice. Then comes Tessarion, who is right now 1/3 of Vermithor in size, which any dragon of the blacks can defeat without effort.

Verdict

Now that you all readers are aware of the current situation and the dragons that rode the Blacks and the Greens, it is clear that the Blacks are at a severe advantage. Sarcastically, the significance of fighting men was reduced to nothing, as they were just bones and ashes in a fight between dragons. Nonetheless, all we fans can do in the meantime is wait and await the inevitable outcome. However, we can all expect a few twists and turns which will pull this series to the 3rd season.
