In the field of Indian cinema, the Mollywood or Malayalam film industry has established itself as one of the frontrunners by engaging the audiences with realistic storytelling and outstanding performances. In this year, 2024, the respective industry has been undergoing a dream run by delivering back to back blockbusters like Manjummel Boys and Premalu. While the other industries, including Bollywood, Tamil or Telugu industries, are struggling to report a clean hit, the Malayalam industry has surpassed ₹1000 CR box office collections worldwide in just the first five months of 2024 in comparison to the total ₹500 CR office collections at the end of 2023. Manjummel Boys
Manjummel Boys has positioned itself as not only the highest-grossing Mollywood film in 2024 but all time ever. Chidambaram directed this survival thriller based on a true incident theatrically released on 22nd March 2024 and became an all-time blockbuster by generating around ₹241.03 CR worldwide box office collections. The movie plot revolves around a group of friends getting into a daring rescue mission when one of them is trapped in the Guna Caves. After completing its theatrical run, the film made its OTT debut on May 5th and is now streaming in Disney Plus Hotstar in multiple languages, including Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi.
Aadujeevitham- The Goat Life
Prithviraj Sukumaran, starring Aadujeevitham-The Goat Life, is in the second position in the list of highest grossing Mollywood or Malayalam movies of 2024. The director of this film is Blessy who has also co-produced and written the screenplay of this survival drama based on the Malayalam novel “Aadujeevitham” by Benyamin. The movie started its theatrical run from March 28, 2024 onwards, and collected around ₹157.6 CR worldwide. The story of this movie explores the real-life story of Najeeb Muhammad, an Indian migrant worker who was forced to live a slave life herding goats in the middle of the desert when he went to Saudi Arabia to earn money.
Aavesham
Fahadh Faasil starrer Aavesham is a Mollywood or Malayalam action comedy film which is directed by Jithu Madhavan. The film premiered in theatres on 11th April 2024 and became available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video from May 9 onwards. As per the plot of the film, three young engineering bachelors seek help from a local gangster named Ranga to take revenge after getting involved in a fight with seniors. Fahadh Faasil has played the role of gangster here. By accumulating around ₹154.8 CR worldwide, the comedy entertainer has secured third position among the top grossers of the Malayalam industry in 2024.
Premalu
This Mollywood romantic comedy film explores a laughter-filled love triangle. The lead star cast of this film includes Naslen K. Gafoor and Mamitha Baiju, while the director is Girish A. D. After release on 9th February 2024, the movie received positive responses from the audiences, making it huge successful at the box office, accumulating around ₹131.5 CR. Those who have missed the film in theatres can now watch it at Disney Plus Hotstar in Malayalam, Tamil, and Hindi languages.
Guruvayoorambala Nadayil
With a star cast of Prithviraj Sukumaran, Basil Joseph, and Nikhila Vimal, this comedy-drama film directed by Vipin Das was released in theatres on 16th May 2024. With positive reviews, the film also became a commercial success with a box office collection of around ₹87.80 CR. The film narrates the bonding of Anandan (Prithviraj) and Vinu (Basil), who are soon going to be brothers-in-law, but for unforeseen circumstances, they challenge each other regarding the wedding between Anjali (Ananadan’s sister) and Vinu.
