Palitana Gujarat: In a groundbreaking move that underscores the city’s commitment to vegetarianism and animal welfare, Palitana has become the first city ever in the World to ban the sale and consumption of non-vegetarian food, including meat and eggs. This is considered a historic decision announced by the local municipal corporation. It aligns with the religious and cultural values of the city, which is very significant as a pilgrimage site for Jains.
What is the rationale behind this move?
Palitana is a city situated in the district of Bhavnagar, Gujarat, India. It is seen that the temple in the city and the whole mountains are called to be the most sacred pilgrimage (tirtha) place, and it is the largest Temple Complex in the World. In recent updates, the city is under discussion, as nearly 200 Jain monks protested for non-violence and killing animals for food consumption. As a result, it led to the closure of 250 butcher shops in the city.
The decision imposes a complete ban on non-vegetarian food, which is a testament to the city’s deep-rooted Jain heritage. It is seen that Palitana is home to over 900 temples on the Shatrunjaya Hills, and it is one of the most sacred sites for the Jain community. The city itself is known as the Jain Temple Town. The city attracts thousands of Jain pilgrims annually who come to worship and practice their faith, which focuses on non-violence or ahimsa and compassion towards all living beings.
It is directly quoted from the Mayor, Sanjeev Kumar Sharma, of Palitana: “We are proud to declare Palitana as the first city in the world to be completely vegetarian,” he further added, “This decision is a reflection of our commitment to uphold the values on non-violence and respect for all life forms, as taught by our Jain faith.”
Is there enough community support and implementation?
The ban was implemented following extensive consultations and business owners. The current estimated population of Palitana Municipality is nearly 89,000. Here, the Jain community, which forms a significant portion of 2.59 per cent of Palitana’s population, has long advocated for such a measure. The local government has worked closely with different stakeholders so that they can ensure a smooth transition.
The municipal corporation has launched awareness campaigns to educate the public about the benefits of the vegetarian diet, so that they could come forward to support this initiative. These campaigns highlight the religious and ethical reasons and also the health and environmental benefits of vegetarianism.
Local markets and food vendors have been given a grace period in order to adjust to the new regulations. It is also found that the government has promised assistance to those whose livelihoods are affected by the ban.
